Heliostar 76Ha — My Dedicated Solar Scope
The Heliostar 76Ha is my dedicated tool for solar observation and imaging in the hydrogen-alpha wavelength. It’s a precision solar telescope designed for those who want high contrast, dynamic views of the Sun’s ever-changing face. Unlike white light or CaK setups, an H-alpha scope reveals the Sun’s chromosphere, making it possible to see fine details like filaments, prominences, spicules, and active regions in real time.
This instrument is purpose-built for H-alpha, with excellent thermal and optical stability, which is essential when working with such a narrow wavelength. The 76mm aperture offers a sweet spot in resolution and portability, and its optical quality really shines when paired with a stable mount and good seeing.
For visual observation or high-resolution imaging, the Heliostar 76Ha has become a favorite in my setup. I especially enjoy using it on clear mornings when the air is stable—those sessions often yield the sharpest results.
Key Features and Specs
-
Aperture: 76mm
Provides a solid balance between resolution and portability for solar work. -
Focal Length: ~500mm (f/6.6)
Ideal focal ratio for solar imaging and visual use without being too demanding on mount tracking. -
Tuning System: Pressure-tuned etalon
Allows fine adjustment of the H-alpha bandwidth to bring out different layers and features on the solar disc. -
Blocking Filter: B1200
Supports both visual and photographic use with a wide range of camera sensors. -
Dedicated H-alpha Etalon: Internal
Delivers rich chromospheric detail with high contrast across the field of view. -
High-quality Crayford Focuser
Smooth and precise, capable of holding heavy imaging gear without flex. -
Modular Design
Scope body and etalon components are cleanly separated, allowing maintenance or upgrades. -
Portable and Lightweight
Easy to set up and transport, making it perfect for spontaneous solar sessions. -
Imaging Compatibility
Works well with mono or color cameras; I currently use it with a planetary cam and a tilt adapter to minimize Newton’s rings. -
Build Quality: Excellent
Solid mechanics, smooth controls, and a well-thought-out design that feels robust in the field.
The Heliostar 76Ha fits perfectly into my imaging routine, especially on days when I don’t want to wait for nightfall. I pair it with my CGX mount and capture video sequences using FireCapture. Stacking and processing are done in AstroSurface, where the fine detail in the prominences and chromosphere really comes out.
It’s also a great outreach tool—there’s something powerful about showing neighbors the Sun live, in all its turbulent glory. And for a hobbyist like me who values hands-on time at the scope, this instrument makes solar observing not just possible, but deeply enjoyable.
